Two hallmarks of biological aging are the shortening of telomeres and the accumulation of senescent cells. Hachmo and colleagues asked whether a hyperbaric oxygen protocol could move either marker in a normal, non-diseased aging population.
What the study looked at
Thirty-five healthy, independently living adults aged 64 and older received 60 daily HBOT sessions. Whole-blood samples were collected at baseline and during the protocol, and telomere length and senescent-cell concentrations were measured across several immune-cell subtypes.
What it found
The authors reported increased telomere length and decreased numbers of senescent cells in the sampled blood cells over the course of treatment.
How strong is the evidence?
This is a small, single-arm prospective trial without a control group, measuring cellular biomarkers rather than clinical aging outcomes. It is striking early signal, not evidence that HBOT extends healthy lifespan. Note this is distinct from the same group’s cognitive-aging trial.
